In her article Why Emotional Intelligence Is in Decline, published in Psychology Today, Dr. Madeleine A. Fugere discusses a meta-analysis by Khan and colleagues that reveals a decrease in emotional intelligence among Western college students from 2001 to 2019.

The study identifies declines in three key areas: well-being, self-control, and emotionality. Factors contributing to this trend include reduced face-to-face interactions and increased technology use, which are linked to lower well-being and self-control.

The findings suggest that societal shifts toward digital communication may be impacting our emotional competencies.
