Introduction to Psychological evaluation

A psychological evaluation is a structured, evidence-based process to understand how an individual thinks, feels, learns, and behaves. It provides insight into cognitive strengths, emotional patterns, and neurodevelopmental differences such as ADHD, Autism, or learning challenges. These assessments are valuable for diagnosis, self-understanding, therapy planning, school support, and workplace accommodations.

At North Tokyo Counseling, we embrace a neurodiversity-affirming approach, recognizing and respecting different ways of thinking and processing the world. Evaluations are tailored to each individual, ensuring both clarity and compassion.

  • WAIS / WISC – Cognitive ability

  • ADOS-2 / CARS – Autism evaluation

  • CAARS / ASEBA – ADHD and behavioral screening

  • MMPI-3 – Personality assessment

  • D-KEFS – Executive functioning

  • ABAS-II – Adaptive behavior

  • R-PAS / H-T-P – Projective testing for deeper personality insight

Note: Assessments are available for individuals aged 7 and above (ASD assessments from age 6).

 

The Evaluation Process:
1. Initial Consultation & Screening
We begin with an interview (online or in person) to understand your concerns, history, and goals. You’ll complete a set of questionnaires, and where helpful, input from parents, teachers, or others may be gathered to build a complete picture.

Outcome: A tailored assessment plan is recommended. You have complete control over whether and how to proceed.

2. Testing Sessions
You’ll complete standardized assessments measuring thinking skills, learning abilities, emotional responses, and behavior. These sessions are conducted in person and typically last 1–3 days, depending on the assessment.

3. Feedback & Report
You'll meet with Dr. Tighe about 3–4 weeks after the final session to review the findings. The report includes:

  • A summary of your concerns

  • The tests used and what they reveal

  • Diagnosis (if applicable)

  • Practical, individualized recommendations

  • Guidance for school, work, and daily life
