What is Psychoanalysis?

Psychoanalysis is a form of therapy that helps you understand yourself more deeply.

Rather than focusing only on immediate problems, it looks at the patterns underneath—how your past experiences, relationships, and emotional habits shape how you think, feel, and respond today.

Many people come to therapy with things like anxiety, low mood, stress, or relationship difficulties. Psychoanalysis doesn’t just aim to reduce those symptoms—it helps you understand why they keep showing up, so real, lasting change becomes possible.

A Contemporary Approach to Deep Change

While psychoanalysis has its roots in traditional therapy, modern psychoanalysis is a collaborative and flexible process. It is not about lying on a couch talking into silence (unless you want to!).

Instead, it’s a thoughtful conversation between you and your therapist. Together, you explore your experiences, your relationships, and the patterns that may be holding you back.

It’s especially helpful if you feel:

  • Stuck in the same patterns, despite your efforts

  • Unsure why certain emotions or reactions keep coming up

  • That something deeper is going on beneath the surface

  • Ready to understand yourself in a more meaningful way

What to Expect

Starting psychoanalysis can feel like stepping into something unfamiliar, so it helps to know what the process is like.

Sessions
You will meet regularly—often once or more per week. Consistency is important, as the work builds over time.

Talking Freely
You’re encouraged to speak openly about whatever comes to mind—thoughts, feelings, memories, or even things that seem small or unrelated. These often turn out to be meaningful.

Exploring Patterns
Over time, we begin to notice patterns—how you relate to others, how you respond to stress, or how certain feelings repeat. Understanding these patterns is a key part of change.

The Therapeutic Relationship
The relationship between you and your therapist becomes an important part of the work. It offers a safe space to explore how you experience closeness, trust, and conflict.

A Gradual Process
This is not a quick fix. Change happens gradually, but it tends to be deeper and more lasting.

What It Requires

This kind of therapy asks a bit more than short-term approaches—but it also offers more in return.

It involves:

  • Showing up regularly

  • Being willing to reflect honestly

  • Staying with the process, even when it feels challenging

  • Giving yourself time to understand and grow

There may be moments where things feel uncomfortable or uncertain. That’s often part of meaningful change—and you won’t be navigating it alone.

Why People Choose This Approach

People often choose psychoanalysis when they want more than just coping strategies. They want to:

  • Break out of repeating patterns

  • Feel more in control of their emotions

  • Improve their relationships

  • Develop a stronger, more stable sense of self

  • Understand themselves at a deeper level

Fees and Flexibility

Because psychoanalysis often involves regular sessions and a longer-term commitment, fees are structured a little differently from standard therapy.

At the same time, I believe this work should be accessible. Fees are discussed together and take into account your circumstances, including how often we meet and your financial situation.

This allows us to find a balance that supports both the therapy and your ability to engage in it.

Getting Started

You don’t need to have everything figured out to begin.

If you’re curious about whether this approach might be right for you, we can start with an initial consultation. This is a chance to talk through what you’re looking for, ask questions, and get a feel for how we might work together.
